Brăila county lies in the Bărăgan plain where the Danube splits into the arms of the Balta Brăilei before rejoining near Măcin. The Măcin and Vâlciu arms and the many riverine lakes — Jirlău, Ianca, Lacul Alb, Ghiolul Sinetelor — are classic big-water carp, bream, pike-perch and wels catfish fisheries. The Buzău river crosses the north of the county.
The Danube arms are covered by the free ANPA recreational permit (with a Border Police endorsement on the main river), and night fishing is permitted. The inland lakes and the Buzău are contracted to AJVPS Brăila, whose permit is required alongside the ANPA permit.
