Dolj county is the heart of Oltenia, spread across the plain between the Jiu and the Danube around Craiova. The Bistreț and Fântânile lakes and a network of Danube-fed ponds and floodplain lakes hold carp, bream, pike, tench and wels catfish. The lower Jiu and the Desnățui are the main rivers.
The Danube itself is covered by the free ANPA recreational permit (with a Border Police endorsement). The inland lakes, ponds and the Jiu are contracted to AJVPS Dolj — one of the largest associations in the country — whose permit is required alongside the ANPA permit. Mountain trout sectors in Dolj are managed by RNP-Romsilva: fishing is daylight only, from sunrise to sunset, with the Romsilva fishing tariff instead of the AJVPS permit. Border waters such as the Prut also need a Border Police endorsement.
