Hunedoara county holds the Retezat, Șureanu and Poiana Ruscă mountains and has one of the richest concentrations of mountain water in the country. The Gura Apelor reservoir sits at the foot of the Retezat on the Râu Mare, backed by dozens of glacial tarns — Bucura, Zănoaga, Peleaga — in the Retezat National Park. The Strei and the Mureș cross the lowland around Deva and Hațeg.
The Retezat rivers and tarns and the Râu Mare are RNP-Romsilva salmonid water (daylight only). Note the strict rule prohibiting fishing within 250 m of any accumulation-lake dam. Lowland waters on the Mureș and Strei are contracted to AJVPS Hunedoara, whose permit is needed with the free ANPA permit.
Every angler needs the free ANPA recreational permit, available online at permise.anpa.ro. It covers the Danube, its arms, the Black Sea and non-contracted public waters.
Most inland lakes and rivers in Hunedoara are contracted to the county fishing association (AJVPS Hunedoara), which requires its own permit — sold by the day or the year and available from the association's offices and partner shops.
Mountain trout sectors in Hunedoara are managed by RNP-Romsilva: fishing is daylight only, from sunrise to sunset, with the Romsilva fishing tariff instead of the AJVPS permit. Border waters such as the Prut also need a Border Police endorsement.
