Galați county sits at the confluence of the Danube, Siret and Prut in south-eastern Moldavia. Lacul Brateș, a large shallow lake beside the Danube at Galați, is the main fishery — carp, bream, pike-perch and wels catfish — supported by smaller lakes on the Suhurlui and Chineja and the lower reaches of the three big rivers.
