Fishing in Apulia, Italy

Apulia (Puglia) is Italy's 'heel', a flat limestone peninsula between the Adriatic and Ionian seas with limited rivers but a network of coastal lagoons, reservoirs and irrigation canals offering coarse and sea fishing. The Ofanto — Apulia's longest river — flows from the Campanian Apennines to the Adriatic near Barletta, holding barbel, chub and carp in its lower reach. The coastal lagoons at Lesina and Varano on the Gargano promontory produce grey mullet, sea bass, eel and bream in sheltered brackish water.

The Pertusillo reservoir in the Agri valley (bordering Basilicata) holds largemouth bass, carp and tench. The Conca delle Doline area near Taranto produces sea fishing opportunities for grouper, bream and sea bass. Bari and Brindisi airports serve the region with direct UK routes. The flat terrain makes all venues very accessible by vehicle.

Key species in Apulia include grey mullet, sea bass, eel, barbel, chub, carp, largemouth bass, bream.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
