Fishing in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is Italy's north-eastern corner, bordered by Austria, Slovenia and the Adriatic — and home to some of the country's finest wild-river fishing. The Tagliamento, often described as the last truly wild river in the Alps, rises in the Carnian Alps and flows to the Adriatic through a pristine braided gravel system holding trout, grayling, huchen and barbel throughout its length. The Isonzo (Soča in Slovenia) crosses from Slovenia at Gorizia carrying the famous emerald-green marble trout — one of the most sought-after freshwater species in Europe.

The Livenza and Meduna rivers drain the Prealps, with trout in the upper sections and barbel downstream. The Lago di Cavazzo and Mauria are small alpine lakes with trout. Trieste airport serves the region; Venice and Ljubljana airports are both under 2 hours away. Night fishing is generally restricted. Permits for the Isonzo marble trout fishery are limited and often sold out well in advance — book through the Gorizia fishing association early.

Key species in Friuli-Venezia Giulia include marble trout, brown trout, grayling, huchen, barbel, chub, carp, asp.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
