Fishing in Trentino-South Tyrol, Italy

Trentino-South Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige / Südtirol) is Italy's northernmost province and one of the finest alpine fishing destinations in central Europe. The Adige (Etsch) rises near the Resia Pass on the Austrian border and flows south through Bolzano and Trento, gathering the Isarco, Passirio and Noce tributaries — all clear, fast mountain rivers holding brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling and huchen (Danube salmon). The Lago di Ledro, Molveno, Tovel and Caldonazzo lakes provide stillwater trout and char fishing at altitude.

The Sarca river below Lago di Garda at Riva del Garda produces large largemouth bass, pike and tench. Night fishing is generally restricted on alpine rivers. A fishing licence (tesserino di pesca) is required from the Provincial authority — day and weekly permits are available without examination at tackle shops throughout the region. Innsbruck airport (Austria) is 90 minutes from Bolzano; Munich airport is 2 hours. The Brenner Pass makes this one of Italy's most accessible alpine regions from northern Europe.

Key species in Trentino-South Tyrol include brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling, huchen, char, largemouth bass, pike, tench.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
