Fishing in Campania, Italy

Campania is Italy's most populated southern region, centred on Naples and the Bay of Naples. Its principal freshwater fishery is the Volturno — Campania's longest river — which rises in Molise and flows through the Campanian plain to the Tyrrhenian near Caserta, holding carp, barbel, chub, catfish and zander on accessible public stretches. The Sele river south of Salerno adds trout in its mountain section and coarse species on the plain.

The volcanic lakes of the Phlegrean Fields near Naples — Lago d'Averno and Lago di Fusaro — provide coastal lagoon fishing for grey mullet, eel and sea bass. The Caserta plain's irrigation network adds canal fishing for carp and tench. Naples airport is the main gateway, with Rome (2 hours) as an alternative. Sea fishing from the Amalfi coast and islands adds another dimension for UK visiting anglers.

Key species in Campania include carp, barbel, chub, catfish, zander, trout, eel, grey mullet, sea bass.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
