Tuscany is one of Italy's most visited regions and its lakes and rivers offer outstanding coarse and predator fishing in a spectacular landscape. The Arno — Tuscany's principal river — flows through Florence and Pisa to the Tyrrhenian, holding carp, barbel, chub, pike and zander on accessible public stretches through the Valdarno. Lago Trasimeno — Italy's fourth largest lake — straddles the Umbria border near Perugia and is one of the most productive public fisheries in central Italy, renowned for its tench, carp and pike.
The Maremma coast holds a series of coastal lagoons — Lago di Burano, Orbetello and Lago di Bolsena (shared with Lazio) — offering eel, carp, grey mullet and sea bass in sheltered tidal waters. The Tiber (Tevere) rises in the Casentino forests and holds barbel and chub in its upper sections before widening south into Lazio. Florence airport serves Tuscany with UK direct flights; Pisa airport is 60 minutes from Florence. The region is approximately 16 hours from the Channel Tunnel by road.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
