Sicily is Italy's largest island and the Mediterranean's most important island fishing destination. Its large reservoir system — built to irrigate the arid interior — holds some of Europe's finest largemouth bass fishing, with specimen fish well over 4 kg accessible to visiting anglers on most waters. The Simeto, Belice and Platani reservoirs are the top venues, while the Biviere di Gela coastal lagoon produces exceptional grey mullet, sea bass and eel. Sicily's rivers are short and seasonal — many run dry in summer.
The best inland fishing season is autumn through spring (October–May) — summer heat drives fish deep and makes daytime sport difficult. Catania and Palermo airports serve the island with direct UK winter-sun routes. Permits are available from local fishing associations (sezioni della FIPSAS) throughout the island. Night fishing is widely permitted. The island is 9 hours by high-speed ferry from Naples.

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
