Fishing in Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna occupies the southern Po plain between Piedmont and the Adriatic, drained by the Po and a series of Apennine rivers flowing north to the valley: the Trebbia, Taro, Parma, Secchia and Reno. The Po through Ferrara province is one of Italy's most productive catfish waters — specimen fish to 2 metres are regularly reported — alongside carp, zander and pike on accessible public banks. The Po delta at Comacchio, shared with Veneto, produces excellent eel, carp and sea bass fishing in its lagoon system.

The Apennine rivers above the plain hold trout and grayling in their clear headwaters. The Trebbia near Piacenza is famous for its summer gravel-bar fishing for barbel and chub. Bologna is Italy's best-connected city by rail and serves UK anglers flying to Malpensa or Bergamo (both about 2 hours). The Po floodplain lakes (casse di espansione) around Reggio Emilia and Parma hold carp and tench in managed stillwaters.

Key species in Emilia-Romagna include catfish, carp, zander, pike, bream, asp, eel, trout, grayling, barbel, chub.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
