Fishing in Lazio, Italy

Lazio surrounds Rome and holds a remarkable concentration of volcanic lake fisheries within easy reach of the capital. Lago di Bolsena — Italy's largest volcanic lake at 114 km² — is famed for its civile perch and coregone (whitefish), and produces good carp, tench and pike. Lago di Bracciano, 35 km north-west of Rome, is another large volcanic lake with strong tench, carp and pike populations accessible to visiting anglers. Lago Albano and Nemi in the Castelli Romani hills complete the volcanic lake cluster.

The Tiber flows through central Rome and offers surprisingly productive fishing for carp, barbel, chub and catfish on public banks. The lower Tiber estuary near Fiumicino produces sea bass, mullet and eel in tidal water. Rome's two international airports (Fiumicino and Ciampino) serve the region with multiple daily UK flights — Lazio is the most convenient Italian fishing base for UK anglers who want to combine fishing with a city visit.

Key species in Lazio include carp, tench, pike, perch, coregone, catfish, barbel, chub, eel, sea bass.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
