Fishing in Calabria, Italy

Calabria is Italy's toe, the southernmost mainland region, surrounded on three sides by the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. Its rivers are short and seasonal — draining steeply from the Aspromonte and Sila mountains to the coast — but hold wild brown trout in their upper sections during spring and autumn. The Crati river in the north holds barbel and chub in its longer lowland section. The coastal lagoons and river mouths hold grey mullet, sea bass, eel and flatfish in the shallow Ionian shore.

The Sila plateau contains several reservoirs — Lago Ampollino and Lago Arvo — offering trout fishing in a high mountain setting (1,200m+). Calabrian fishing is less developed for visiting UK anglers than northern Italy, but the undiscovered nature of the waters can mean less fishing pressure. Lamezia Terme airport serves the region with summer UK charter flights. The Strait of Messina connects to Sicily.

Key species in Calabria include brown trout, barbel, chub, grey mullet, sea bass, eel, flatfish.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
