Piedmont is Italy's largest mainland region and holds the greatest number of public fishing venues in the country. The Po river — Italy's longest — rises in the Cottian Alps near Monviso and flows east through Turin, gathering the Dora Riparia, Dora Baltea, Sesia, Ticino and Tanaro before leaving the region. These tributaries drain the Alpine arc and Ligurian Apennines, offering an extraordinary variety: fast mountain rivers with trout and grayling in their upper reaches, mid-sections ideal for barbel, chub and asp, and the broad Po corridor with catfish, carp, zander and pike.
