Fishing in Piedmont, Italy

Piedmont is Italy's largest mainland region and holds the greatest number of public fishing venues in the country. The Po river — Italy's longest — rises in the Cottian Alps near Monviso and flows east through Turin, gathering the Dora Riparia, Dora Baltea, Sesia, Ticino and Tanaro before leaving the region. These tributaries drain the Alpine arc and Ligurian Apennines, offering an extraordinary variety: fast mountain rivers with trout and grayling in their upper reaches, mid-sections ideal for barbel, chub and asp, and the broad Po corridor with catfish, carp, zander and pike.

The piedmontese lakes — Lago Maggiore (shared with Lombardy) and the smaller Orta, Viverone and Avigliana lakes — provide stillwater options alongside the rivers. The Ticino below Lago Maggiore is one of Italy's finest coarse rivers, producing specimen catfish, asp and pike. Turin is served by a major international airport with direct UK flights, and the western Alps provide alpine fishing within 90 minutes of the city.

Key species in Piedmont include trout, grayling, barbel, chub, asp, catfish, carp, pike, zander, tench.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
