Fishing in Liguria, Italy

Liguria is Italy's narrow coastal riviera between France and Tuscany, backed by the Ligurian Apennines. Its rivers are short and fast, draining steeply from the mountains to the Ligurian Sea — the Roia, Nervia, Centa and Magra in the west hold trout and grayling in their mountain sections and barbel where they reach the coastal plain. Fishing in Liguria combines small-river coarse fishing with coastal sea angling for sea bass, bream, mullet and grouper from accessible shoreline.

The Po tributaries draining northward from the Ligurian Apennines — including the Scrivia and Bormida — provide more productive coarse fishing just over the watershed in Piedmont. Genoa airport serves the region; Nice airport is 90 minutes to the west. The region is best combined with fishing in Piedmont or Tuscany rather than as a standalone destination for UK coarse anglers.

Key species in Liguria include trout, grayling, barbel, chub, sea bass, grey mullet, bream.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
