Fishing in Molise, Italy

Molise is Italy's second smallest and least-known region — a remote mountain territory between Campania, Abruzzo and Apulia, with fishing that remains well off the beaten track. The Biferno river is Molise's main waterway, rising near Boiano and flowing to the Adriatic at Termoli through a productive mid-river stretch for barbel, chub and carp. The Biferno reservoir (Lago del Liscione) near Campobasso is the region's main stillwater, holding carp, tench and pike.

The Trigno and Volturno rivers rise in Molise's Apennines and drain to the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian respectively, with trout in their mountain sections. The region's quiet roads and uncrowded waters are attractions in themselves. Pescara airport (Abruzzo) and Rome are the nearest airports — Molise is best combined with Abruzzo or Campania for a longer fishing trip.

Key species in Molise include barbel, chub, carp, tench, trout, pike, bream.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
