Fishing in Umbria, Italy

Umbria is Italy's landlocked 'green heart', known for its hill towns and olive oil but holding some excellent fishing in its lakes and rivers. Lago Trasimeno — Italy's fourth largest lake — is Umbria's premier stillwater, a shallow, reed-fringed lake near Perugia holding abundant tench, carp, pike and perch accessible to visiting anglers. The lake is managed for public fishing and day permits are available at the shore. The Tiber (Tevere) rises in Umbria and flows south through Perugia, holding barbel, chub and carp.

The Nera and Corno rivers in eastern Umbria descend from the Sibillini Mountains through spectacular gorges, holding excellent trout and grayling. The Marmore waterfall on the Velino near Terni is a protected area but the surrounding river holds barbel and chub. Perugia has an international airport with some summer UK connections; Rome is 2 hours, Florence 90 minutes.

Key species in Umbria include tench, carp, pike, perch, barbel, chub, trout, grayling, eel.

Fishing Licence & Permits

All anglers require a valid Licenza di pesca tipo A issued by the relevant Italian regional authority (approximately €13). Most regions also require a tesserino regionale (regional fishing card). Day and weekly permits are available at local tackle shops and comune offices. No examination required for visitors.

Fishing in Italy is managed at regional level. The national licence (Licenza di pesca tipo A) is low-cost and widely available. Night fishing is permitted at many venues. Motorised boats are restricted on many alpine lakes.
